Mandan Rodeo Earns Badlands Circuit Award

MANDAN – People don’t volunteer for personal recognition, they do it for love of a cause, community involvement and a way to give back. That is certainly the case for the Mandan Rodeo Days committee and countless rodeo committees across the nation.

In 1984 the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), through a vote of their members, started recognizing these committees for their hard work. The PRCA is also divided into 12 regional circuits and many of them, including the Badlands Circuit, have followed suit in selecting a committee of the year.

The Badlands Circuit is comprised of rodeo’s sanctioned by the PRCA and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association in the states of North and South Dakota. The RAM Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo was held in Minot, Oct. 6-9 where circuit champions were crowned and special awards were presented. The Mandan Rodeo held annually over the Fourth-of-July received the committee or the year award for the first time.

“The Badlands are known for great cowboys and cowgirls with historical rodeo figures like Casey Tibbs,” said Bruce Schirado, Mandan Rodeo committee chairman. “Along with those contestants there are some really great rodeos in the circuit and we are very proud to be among those events.”

Mandan’s award breaks a 15-year winning streak by the Days of 76 Rodeo at Deadwood, S.D. Their rodeo, like many others is rich in history and tradition and is a community-wide event.

“We are very proud to have this award in Mandan,” Schirado added. “As a community everyone contributes to the success of our events and this is for the whole community. We have all been working hard to grow this rodeo and appreciate everyone’s support.”

Along with the rodeo of the year award, Mandan’s own Ty Breuer, won the bareback riding at the Badlands Circuit Finals. He also earned the year-end championship. Breuer has now secured his second qualification to the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo next April in Kissimmee, Fla. He is also 12th in the PRCA world standings and will be competing at his second Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas beginning December 1st.
